Why is it in disaster movies when asteroids about to destroy earth the only ones shown to respond are American?

I mean why are the Russians or the Japanese not shown to respond? Do the film makers forget that they too have the capacity to do the same or that they too live in the same planet and that they too would be just as panic stricken and eager to help destroy the asteroids? I was always a little miffed by this.
