In the 1950s did women wear stockings or ankle socks in summer?

Grown women wore "hose" with garter belts or girdles when they went out in public. They wore what they wanted at home. Mom would put on the girdle and hose and lipstick, do her hair, put on a dress or skirt-blouse just to go to the grocery store. She'd put on a hat and gloves for church (and the "dress" shoes). And grown women always wore a bra, those highly quilted, structured bras. And slips/petticoats. There was a lot of clothes involved. Purses were forms of small luggage, not shoulder bags or back packs. Baby buggies were small cars with hoods that went up or down and the moms had to wheedle these things around.
