Why Charles Manson is still alive?

I was not born in US, nor live there. So pardon me, if I never heard about Manson until few years back, one thing that made me confused, what the **** is wrong with United States Government? The whole world is laughing at them now days cause of the economic turbulence, but I'm just surprised that this psychopath serial killer is in jail now? Wow just wow!
